Brief History
Göbeklitepe is the oldest known group of cult structures in the world, located near Örencik Village, approximately 22 km northeast of Şanlıurfa city center. The common feature of these structures is that approximately 12 T-shaped obelisks are arranged in a circular plan and between them are built with a stone wall. In the center of this structure, two higher obelisks are placed opposite each other. Human, hand and arm, various animal and abstract symbols are depicted in relief or carving on most of these obelisks.
The obelisk you will examine is one of the obelisks found in Göbeklitepe. It is placed on a rectangular pedestal. At the corners of the plinth, you can touch the remains of the cut stone wall. When you examine the body of the obelisk, you will feel that there are relief figures on its two wide surfaces. On one surface, at the bottom, you can touch the legs, neck, head and beak of the standing crane. Just above the crane is a relief of a fox. You can touch the fox's body, ears and mouth by first following its legs, then its long tail.
There is a bull relief on the fox relief. You can feel its four legs, torso, tail, and horns on both sides of its head by touching it. On the other large surface of the obelisk, there is a relief of a single fox. In the upper part of the obelisk, there is a rectangular stone wider than its body.
