Pamukkale Travertines

PAMUKKALE TRAVERTINES

Brief History

Pamukkale is in the Aegean region in the city of Denizli. It is a natural wonder formed by the formation of small pools flowing into each other as the underground waters pour down a sloping land. Although Pamukkale is not soft in texture, is named with its white color and its cottony appearance.

The geography where Pamukkale is located, Çürüksu, formerly Lykos Valley, has a special structure with its thermal water resources. The thermal water creates the travertines as the lime solution in its body precipitated because of evaporation and the decomposition of carbon dioxide in the water. Limestone tuffs, generally white in colour and resembling cotton piles, form Pamukkale travertines.

People have used these water resources for therapeutic purposes for thousands of years, and they have turned the city into a medical center by building functional hot springs.

This model, which you will examine, represents a part of the travertines in Çürüksu Valley. Consisting of cascading pools from top to bottom, this structure covers a large area along the valley slope. When you touch the edges of the pools, you can feel the texture formed by the hardening of the sediments left by the thermal water filling these pools and flowing down the edges. The surface inside the pools is designed as slippery and smooth to represent the water.
